Doctor Michael W. Hutchins is a board certified anesthesiologist specializing in the care of patients who undergo complex spine surgery.
After practicing for years with the pre-eminent Anesthesia Group in Denver, Dr. Hutchins was appointed Chief of Anesthesia at Swedish Medical Center. Subsequently, Dr. Hutchins joined the University of Colorado Health Science Center’s clinical faculty, where he used the latest advances in anesthesia care. During this period, Dr. Hutchins recognized an alternative practice model, wherein anesthesiology partners with a small group of surgeons could offer substantial benefits to patient outcomes. Dr. Hutchins brought this advanced practice model to the Colorado Comprehensive Spine Institute (CCSI).
As a partner at CCSI, Dr. Hutchins focuses his skill set on the unique demands of the spine patient during surgery. During Dr. Frey’s most complex reconstruction, revision, and scoliosis surgeries, Dr. Hutchins provides anesthesiology care. He is also available for clinical consultation. This enables the Colorado Comprehensive Spine Institute to offer an unrivaled level of continuity of care in Denver’s medical community.
Dr. Hutchins also serves as the Medical Director for the Englewood Surgery Center. In his role, his expertise helps shape policy and systems development, quality control, and patient satisfaction initiatives.
Dr. Hutchins received a BS in Biology and a BA in Psychology from the University of California at Irvine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Before attending medical school, he worked as a computer engineer on advanced digital signal processing systems with Texas Instruments and authored articles on speech recognition and synthesis.
He completed an Internal Medicine internship and Anesthesiology residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. Dr. Hutchins keeps current by regularly participating in continuing medical education opportunities.
Dr. Hutchin’s wife Dottie, also a physician, and their son and daughter, live in Denver. Dr. Hutchins is a private pilot, mountaineer, and race car driver. He enjoys all forms of water sports, including scuba diving and wakeboarding.
